Danish boy scouts row a replica of a Viking ship.

Definitely too much body in this one

IMPORTANT – Pontoon repairs, please read

From Matt Duly, property master:

The timber deck repair should take one day, may run into two days, and absolute worst case three days. Accordingly we cannot start the repair on a Thursday. The timber should arrive in Sydney tomorrow (Friday 11 July) and so I have arranged with MDS Marine to commence the repair on Tuesday 15 July. The pontoon will be closed from 7am on 15 July and will be open once all repairs are complete. Obviously while the repair is underway with the hole in the pontoon and the equipment involved, it is not safe to be on the timber deck or pontoon.

The timber deck and pontoon will be closed from 7am on 15 July until the deck is repaired – no exceptions.

[Ed. note: suggestions for training junkies: run the Bay, do an erg, pump some iron, swim in the Leichhardt pool, sleep in… (particularly good for training!)]

Membership fees are now due

Pay them online now.
Remember that to be able to race, you will need to pay your Rowing NSW fees as well.

LRC Awards Night – Saturday 12th July, 6.30pm

See you all tomorrow night!

Captain’s Log

Silver Tail Sport

I have finally realised why things are the way they are. You are all used to having servants, maids( and possibly mothers) pick up after you. That explains why the weights are often left all over the floor and private property left lying around for someone to hand back to you. My apologies. If those responsible for these occurrences could email me their servants contact details I will take it up with them.

JB Sharp this Sunday

Please email me if you are intending to compete so that Belinda can sort out any issues with boat allocations. Please also include your preferred boat. A program is on the pin board outside the office.
To compete you must have your membership with Rowing NSW up to date. If you have never enrolled with them you will need to get a signed form from me. Email me and I can send it to you.

Trivia Night

This is going to be the best one yet. I have just locked in our Quiz Master and she is well underway with the program. Make sure you reserve the night in your diaries – August 16th. Promo leaflet will be out soon. The aim for all members is to get a table of your friends together and book a table. The more “non-members” attending the better. That way we can work on getting them to spend a few dollars, not just on you!
Donations required for our silent auction. Think what you could donate to help our fundraising cause.

Corporate and Learn To Row

I have received about 12 applications to coach or cox in August. Thanks on behalf of the whole club, to those people. Can they please email me their preferred training days.
I still need 2 more coaches and about 10 coxes. If you are able to help please email me ASAP. It is a very rewarding experience and supports the major fund raising event for the year. Any of you can help in some way.

Bad Weather

If we get bad weather one morning especially on the weekend, can I ask that if you are unable to go out but are down at the Club that you and your mates roll the blue mats up in a bay and sweep out the concrete floor. This does not get done very often but the dust and filth builds up quickly. It does not take long and it helps to lower my blood pressure.

Private Racks

Remember that only once you have paid your 2014/15 LRC membership fees are you able to rent a rack, if approved. A list of those approved (subject to paying their membership fees) will be in the bookings cabinet this weekend.

Boat Rally

Five eights competed in our 4th boat rally last Sunday. We raised over $600 to go towards club equipment. That’s 2 new oars. Thanks to all those who took part.
See you for a new course next year.

It was a golden era for Australian and New South Wales Rowing where Mervyn Finlay had, along with others, achieved success under the direction of one of the country’s earliest sports scientists, Professor Frank Cotton. Mervyn had earlier in 1948 showed his athletic potential as a State Champion 880 Yards runner after serving as a Flying Officer in the RAAF in World War 2.

Ask Odus

Klaus: Odus, who will win the Football World Cup?
Odus: Dear Klaus, I would like to remind you I am an owl and not an octopus. But my money and hopes are on Argentina. History has shown that a victory speech in German is not good news.

Green Ivy: Odus, who is the best rower in the Club?
Odus: Ah! Come to the awards night tomorrow to find out.

And Andy Pandy answered the question from last week:

Deep Down: Odus, why if I type “rowing icon” on Google Images I get pictures of kayakers?
Andy Pandy: Icons of kayakers appears because of a couple of reasons:
1. the icon publishers/designers have categorized the rowing icons and the kyaking icons in the same category such as “water sports” and both sports icons fit these categories
2. the kyakers icons are in a related sport and google is offering suggestions

Thanks for your immense wisdom Andy! One day you will be just like me.

Send your existential questions to Odus, to see if he’s got enough guts to answer them.
