Anzac Day row was memorable

Over 200 rowers from metropolitan/inner west rowing clubs across Sydney, including Leichhardt, Balmain, Penrith, Sydney University (USYD), UNSW and Pymble Ladies’ College, commemorated the 100 years landing of the ANZACs at Gallipoli by attending a dawn service of remembrance on Blackwattle Bay Glebe.

Tying up on a rope line between tugs from the Sydney Heritage Fleet, and joined by Rowing NSW and others on land, we heard of the courage of the soldiers who volunteered to row the troop boats at Anzac Cove, knowing that they would be targets for Turkish gun fire. In the quietness of the dawn, as the Last Post was played, kookaburras burst into song. A truly memorable Anzac Day.

Many members were involved in the organising of the Anzac Day row but in particular, the club wants to thank the organising committee of Matt Duly, Andrew Hine, Trevor Sills, Brian Dunn and Doreen Borg. Special thanks to the Sydney Heritage Fleet for the tugs, Justin from Lejen Marine for the rescue boat, and CGU Insurance for sponsoring breakfast.

Thanks also to everyone – the people who stayed overnight at the boatshed and got it ready, the pontoon marshals, the crew captains, the tinny crews, and everyone who got up so early for this special commemoration.

Check out Leichhardt Rowing Club Facebook page to see photos of the row.

Boat Maintenance – last weekend

Thanks to all the crews who turned up to carry out repairs on their designated boats. Please cross the boats you have done off the list on the notice board upstairs.

To those unable to attend last weekend who have promised they will do it this weekend, please carry out the work and cross the boats off once done.

To those who couldn’t care I will remember when you send in your boat bookings – Green boats only!

Packing up before you leave the pontoon

Remember to put something away when you return from your row. Don’t leave everything out for the single sculler to put away, but be mindful if someone is still on the water to not lock them out.

Orientation Day for new members (or old ones too)

Remember: New members orientation at 8.30am Saturday 9 May

Nepal earthquake appeal: Clothing and blanket appeal

LRC is supporting an appeal from Castlecove Rotary for clothing and blankets to send to Nepal. Please leave clothes, preferably warmer clothing, and blankets in the white plastic bin with the sign ‘Nepal’.
The bin is beside the lost property table. LRC member Rex Chadwick can be contacted if you need any further information.
