The Crane

You might have noticed that the tinny crane (aka Davit) is out of action - again. In fact for the last few months it has been out of action more often that not. This time the motor has burnt out and the cost to replace it will be significant - '000s.

At our meeting this week the Committee discussed whether the crane is necessary. Before we had it, all crews were required to help their coach get their tinny on and off the water - part of rowing. Since the crane has been installed, the job of getting the tinny on and off has been left increasingly to the coach alone. Whilst the crane is clearly useful to single handed coaches, the space taken up on the pontoon by the whole process of getting tinnies on and off via crane is disruptive to those trying to take fours, singles and doubles out of the bay closest the bridge (our busiest bay).

So - we've decided to live without the crane for a further month and see how we go. There will be some who will see this as a "disaster" and others who will see it as a Godsend. Let's go without it for a month and see what happens. During that month all crews and coaches need to dedicate headspace to getting the tinny on and off on the blue pontoon. If coaches are left to get the tinny by themselves that will be because they failed to encourage their crew to help. Note that we are one of the very few clubs that have a crane and also that Pymble don't use it. Let the debate commence!!

Vale Alan Flint

from Barry Moynahan

Alan Flint, Leichhardt Rowing Club’s longest serving Treasurer passed away 25th January 2017.
He joined the Club in 1969 after a strong interest in Rugby Union. Between 1972 and 1999 he served as Treasurer with fund raising through raffles, phone book deliveries etc, together with his simple hand written monthly reports personally presented at Monthly Committee Meetings. His financial administration resulted in his Life Membership awarded in 1978.

On his retirement he moved from his family residence at Beverly Hills to Wamberal on the Central Coast. In recent years, health issues resulted in his transfer to an Aged Care Facility in Erina, where Old Rower representatives, Ross Ullo and Tony Potter made their final visit only days before his passing.

Alan was a very private person and kept to himself: He enjoyed the TV provided by the Leichhardt “Balcony Boyz” whilst in the facility, and will always be remembered for that magnificent smile and handshake he gave on farewells.

His funeral Service will be conducted at the East Chapel, Rookwood Cemetery on Monday, 6th February 2017, at 11.15am.
